TL;DR
Avionics Systems Engineer (Flight Computer System) (Aerospace): Designing, integrating, and validating spacecraft avionics and flight-computing systems for the reusable Nyx orbital vehicle with an accent on system architecture, data handling, communications, and interface management. Focus on defining fault-tolerant computing architectures, managing end-to-end requirements and interfaces, and verifying mission-critical systems through simulation, HIL, and system-level testing.

Location: On-site in Munich, Germany. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are provided where applicable.

Company

The Exploration Company develops, produces, and operates Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle designed to carry cargo and potentially humans.

What you will do

  • Define and develop spacecraft avionics system architectures covering electronics, flight computing, data handling, communications, and control.
  • Define computing, telemetry, telecommand, communication, data-flow, timing, synchronization, storage, and operational-mode concepts.
  • Develop FDIR, fault containment, redundancy management, and autonomous spacecraft operation concepts.
  • Manage interfaces between avionics, power, propulsion, GNC, payload, launch vehicle, and ground-segment systems, coordinating with teams, suppliers, and external stakeholders.
  • Define and support verification and validation strategies, including simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and system-level testing; analyze anomalies and drive corrective actions.
  • Manage system and subsystem requirements, maintain traceability, prepare technical documentation, support design reviews, integration campaigns, launch preparation, and mission operations.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • 5+ years of experience in avionics systems, electronics, embedded systems, or spacecraft engineering.
  • Strong understanding of electronic and embedded system architectures, communication and data-handling principles, and system integration and interface management.
  • Experience with requirements engineering and system lifecycle development.
  • Knowledge of verification and validation methods, including testing and simulation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work in multidisciplinary engineering environments.
  • Ability to technically present, defend, and substantiate avionics subsystem designs and verification evidence to external regulatory and certification authorities, including NASA, ESA, and other government agencies.

Nice to have

  • Experience in spacecraft avionics or aerospace systems.
  • Familiarity with space communication and data standards such as CCSDS.
  • Experience with HIL testing, simulation environments, or digital engineering tools.
  • Exposure to safety-critical or mission-critical system development.
  • Experience working in international or multi-stakeholder engineering teams.

Culture & Benefits

  • Agile environment with fast decision-making while maintaining focus on goals and system integrity.
  • Open and collaborative culture with transparent discussion of risks and obstacles.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of reusable spacecraft and the democratization of space.
  • Relocation assistance is available, including visa sponsorship where applicable.
  • Employment offers are contingent on a background check subject to the country, role, and project.
