Embedded Linux Contractor (IoT)

Location: Hybrid, Theale near Reading, UK

Provider of secure IoT connectivity and end-to-end solutions, including communication systems for alarm panels and alarm receiving centers.

What you will do

• Design and develop robust protocol handlers for alarm panels using C over RS485 and Ethernet.
• Add local web page UI elements and JSON configuration.
• Redesign and rewrite existing C++ software in C using small modular processes.
• Maintain code quality through unit tests, Python-based system tests, and code reviews.
• Investigate low-level interface issues involving RS232, RS485, and network traffic with tools such as Wireshark.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience developing embedded Linux products.
• Strong commercial experience developing production embedded Linux software in C.
• Ability to read, understand, and make minor changes to a C++ codebase.
• Reasonable Python skills for writing automated tests.
• Very strong Git skills, including clean commits and incorporating review feedback, together with experience using Agile development methodologies.
• Good knowledge of IP technologies such as DHCP, DNS, and routing.
• Awareness of character encodings and conversion.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Good understanding of software security principles and best practices.
• Comfort using AI-assisted development tools or willingness to adopt them where they improve productivity and quality.
• Eligibility to work in the relevant country.

Nice to have

• Experience with BACnet, MQTT, and JSON.
