Controller (Biotech)

Location: San Francisco, California; hybrid schedule with office attendance Monday through Thursday and remote work on Friday.

Salary: $195,000–$240,000 annually.

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team while setting priorities, reviewing work, and planning future growth.
• Oversee AP/AR, revenue, payroll accounting, fixed assets, financial reporting, and the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close.
• Prepare financial statements under US GAAP, monthly flux analyses, and variance and trend reporting for finance leadership.
• Lead annual financial statement audits, manage auditor relationships, coordinate technical accounting work, and prepare audit schedules, PBC responses, technical memos, and investor analyses.
• Partner with Supply Chain, Operations, and other teams to bring inventory accounting fully into NetSuite and improve accounting systems and processes.
• Design and maintain internal controls, refine policies and procedures, and manage external relationships covering audit, banking, compliance, insurance, and tax.

Requirements

• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in public accounting and 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller.
• 3+ years of direct people management experience, including hiring, coaching, and developing staff.
• Experience owning the full month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process, including financial statements and flux or variance analyses.
• Experience leading financial statement audits end to end, preparing audit schedules, managing PBC requests, and serving as the primary auditor contact.
• Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP, including the ability to research accounting issues and prepare technical memos.
• Experience with inventory and cost accounting.
• Hands-on experience with NetSuite and Bill.com.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with internal teams, with advanced Excel and analytical skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including explaining financial results clearly to non-finance stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience in a biotech, pharmaceutical, or FDA-regulated life sciences company.
• Cost accounting experience in a manufacturing, GMP, or lab-processing environment, including standard costing and inventory valuation for biological or perishable products.
• Experience implementing an inventory module or integrating an inventory management system with NetSuite.
• Experience with clinical trial or R&D expense accruals, including CRO and CDMO arrangements.
• Experience accounting for government grants or contracts.
