Staff Software Engineer (JavaScript/Node.js)

Location: New York, NY; New York Office or Remote

Salary: $160,000–$220,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Lead complex engineering initiatives from discovery through delivery and operation, translating product and business needs into technical plans.
• Build subscription offers, checkout, promotions, gifting, onboarding, account management, paywalls, registration, and retention experiences.
• Strengthen integrations across authentication, payments, subscription status, content entitlements, and reader access on web and mobile.
• Evolve the publishing platform through reusable components, editorial tools, reader experiences, APIs, and content models.
• Improve reliability, testing, observability, performance, accessibility, security, developer workflows, and technical debt management.
• Mentor engineers, lead code and design reviews, collaborate with product, design, editorial, analytics, and consumer revenue teams, and develop responsible AI-assisted and agentic workflows.

Requirements

• Deep JavaScript expertise and substantial experience building and operating production web applications and Node.js services.
• Experience leading complex technical initiatives across systems or teams with impact beyond individual contributions.
• Strong frontend fundamentals in HTML, CSS, accessibility, browser behavior, and application performance, with experience in Vue or React.
• Experience designing APIs, data models, and integrations, including authentication, authorization, and transactional workflows.
• Sound judgment when evolving mature codebases and deciding when to extend existing patterns or introduce new approaches.
• Strong debugging and testing skills across application, service, and data boundaries.
• Ability to connect engineering decisions to reader experience and business outcomes, including subscription conversion, engagement, and retention.
• Experience using AI development tools responsibly, including evaluating generated output and applying human review.
• Clear communication, collaborative technical leadership, and ability to contribute to TypeScript and React Native codebases.

Nice to have

• Experience with consumer subscriptions, digital media, ecommerce, or recurring customer relationships.
• Experience with paywalls, payment platforms, subscription billing, identity systems, or entitlement management.
• Experience with experimentation platforms, conversion analytics, and customer lifecycle experiences.
• React Native, Expo, or experience shipping iOS and Android applications.
• Content management systems, editorial workflows, PostgreSQL, Redis, or Elasticsearch.
• Experience building reusable AI workflows, agent tooling, or engineering productivity automation.
