Head of Technology (Healthcare)

Location: Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; hybrid work with 3 days per week in the office. Other location: Raleigh/Durham, NC.

What you will do

• Set the strategy and architecture for acquiring, de-identifying, tokenizing, linking, and managing clinical data from health system partners, including Epic, Cerner, claims, and third-party sources.
• Own the technology vision, architecture decisions, engineering standards, build-versus-buy decisions, platform scalability, and cloud cost efficiency.
• Lead security, compliance, and enterprise IT programs covering HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, health system and sponsor audits, AI governance controls, and secure internal tools.
• Lead engineering and IT leaders, including organizational design, hiring plans, career paths, delivery accountability, incident reviews, and team health.
• Own the engineering and IT budget, cloud spend, vendor contracts, planning, delivery metrics, and on-call operating rhythm.
• Partner with Product, Quantitative Sciences, Medical, Commercial, Clinical Operations, AI/ML, and Health Systems leaders on roadmaps, priorities, and partner onboarding.

Requirements

• 12+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years leading multi-team organizations through engineering managers.
• Experience working with healthcare organizations and healthcare data.
• Experience overseeing corporate IT, directly or through an IT leader.
• Deep technical grounding in AWS data architecture, including S3, Glue, Athena, EMR, Lake Formation, and IAM, plus infrastructure as code.
• Experience with a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake.
• Working knowledge of HIPAA and security frameworks such as HITRUST or SOC 2.
• Track record of hiring and developing engineering leaders and scaling teams and platforms from early stage to growth.
• Experience owning an engineering budget, including cloud spend and vendor contracts.
• Clear written and verbal communication and judgment to balance speed, cost, and rigor.
• Experience supporting ML and LLM workloads in production; familiarity with FHIR, OMOP, or other clinical data standards.

Nice to have

• Experience with tokenization and privacy-preserving record linkage, such as Datavant.
