Staff Engineer, Payments (Fintech)

What you will do

• Shape the technical direction and roadmap for the payments platform across Australia, the UK and New Zealand with the product manager and tech lead.
• Lead the design of complex payment flows, ledger, settlement, reconciliation and integration improvements.
• Represent the squad in technical discussions with payment partners, acquirers, banks and card schemes.
• Strengthen platform reliability, risk management, PCI DSS compliance and incident-response practices.
• Write production code for consequential changes, review code and improve engineering standards through design reviews and mentoring.
• Advise the CPTO and tech lead on the next stage of the card and payments strategy.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years building production payment systems at a fintech, payments company, acquirer, issuer, scheme or bank.
• Experience leading significant payments design work through production.
• Deep practical understanding of card payments and the behaviour of schemes, acquirers and payment providers.
• Experience designing ledgers, settlement and reconciliation systems where financial correctness is measured in cents.
• Strong backend engineering in a modern language on cloud infrastructure, with sound judgement about shipping designs.
• Working knowledge of PCI DSS and designing systems that minimise compliance scope.
• Experience leading payment-system incident response and reducing incident load through structural improvements.
• Experience improving engineers through design reviews and mentoring, with credibility among executives and external partners.
• Fluency with AI development tools, judgement about their limitations, and strong familiarity with idempotency and duplicate handling.

Nice to have

• Card issuing or issuer-processor experience.
• Experience in a high-growth fintech, neobank, BNPL or payments company operating under significant volume and regulatory scrutiny.
• Familiarity with the Australian payments landscape and UK, New Zealand and US schemes.
• Experience with a serverless AWS stack and event-driven systems.
• Exposure to fraud and risk platforms, QSAs or ISO 27001 programmes.
• Experience in a two-sided marketplace or hospitality technology.
• Experience migrating a live financial system, safely changing legacy code on a money path, or architecting transaction authorisation under strict time limits.
