Software Engineer, Backend (Robotics)

Location: San Francisco, CA, US

Salary: $130,600–$192,000, $159,800–$235,000, or $193,800–$285,000 per year, depending on level, qualifications, and work location.

What you will do

• Design and implement backend services for autonomous drone delivery integrated with core delivery data.
• Build intelligent path-planning, real-time fleet-management, and dynamic-airspace-awareness capabilities.
• Develop scalable, fault-tolerant systems for safe and efficient drone operations.
• Create simulations and testing frameworks to validate path-planning algorithms and system reliability.
• Improve performance, scalability, security, and operational stability while supporting aviation compliance.
• Introduce tools and engineering practices that accelerate drone development.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• 6+ years of industry experience as a software engineer, particularly with backend systems, robotics, or autonomous systems.
• Strong experience developing path-planning algorithms, simulations, and testing frameworks for robotics or autonomous systems.
• Professional experience with Kotlin or C++.
• Experience with distributed systems, service-oriented architecture, REST APIs, unit testing, and architectural design.
• Knowledge of robotics and IoT networking protocols, SQL or NoSQL databases, and real-time operational systems.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with aviation regulations and safety standards such as FAA Part 107.
• Experience with gRPC, Kafka, Redis, Postgres, Cassandra, AWS, Kubernetes, or Docker.
• Experience with ROS or other robotics middleware.
• Familiarity with geospatial data and mapping technologies.
