Data Scientist, Project Success and Innovation (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States or from AIR offices in Arlington, Virginia; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Sacramento, California; or Austin, Texas. U.S. territories are excluded.

Annual salary: $114,000–$140,000 USD

What you will do

• Build and maintain reusable analytic tools, code libraries, project templates, and pipelines for research teams.
• Prototype, test, and support responsible use of machine learning, AI, and large language model applications.
• Develop documentation, training materials, onboarding guides, and support resources for technical tools and workflows.
• Lead quantitative analyses for causal and non-causal research and evaluation projects.
• Manage, clean, quality-assure, and document complex datasets and reproducible analytic workflows.
• Draft technical reports, memos, and presentations while translating findings for non-technical audiences.

Requirements

• Master’s or doctoral degree in a quantitative field, recently completed or nearing completion.
• Experience with causal inference, statistical modeling, complex survey data, and large-scale administrative, longitudinal, or linked datasets.
• Experience applying quantitative methods to education, health, or social policy questions.
• Proficiency in R and/or Python and working knowledge of Stata.
• Familiarity with Git, GitHub, Quarto, R Markdown, Jupyter, and reproducible research practices.
• Must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States; employment-based visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience with restricted-use or confidential data.
• Experience building or maintaining code used by other people.
• Familiarity with machine learning, AI, and large language model applications in research.
