Director of Engineering (AI)

Location: Hybrid work environment with offices in Reston, Virginia and Austin, Texas; U.S. work authorization or eligibility for required U.S. government authorizations is required.

Salary: $200,000–$275,000 USD per year, with potential annual bonus, equity, and other incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Lead and develop a software engineering team working with AI engineers to deliver production-ready features.
• Own execution from functional prototypes through stable, scalable, and accredited services.
• Set technical direction and establish engineering standards for architecture, delivery, security, and ownership.
• Guide systems designed for cloud, AWS GovCloud, restricted, and fully disconnected environments.
• Oversee hardened container images, CI/CD pipelines, deployment artifacts, incident response, and root cause analysis.
• Partner with Product, Program, Security, and customer-facing leaders to prioritize work and manage delivery risk.

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience for Manager-level scope or 8+ years for Director-level scope, including at least 1 year leading teams building and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Technical depth in Python, PostgreSQL or a comparable relational database, RESTful API design, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, distributed systems, CI/CD, automated testing, and observability.
• Experience guiding architecture, debugging, operational decisions, security controls, and production delivery.
• Strong written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to have

• Experience with FastAPI and GitLab CI.
• Experience leading teams that ship AI-backed features such as LLM inference, agents, or retrieval.
• Experience using AI coding assistants with clear standards for code review, testing, security, and ownership.
