Principal Test Automation Engineer

Location: Liverpool City Centre HQ, hybrid with 3 days in the office. Applicants must have at least one year remaining on a UK Graduate or Post-Study Work visa; visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: £70,000–£80,000 per year, dependent on experience.

What you will do

• Design and build a shared, versioned test harness with ephemeral infrastructure, test data seeding, teardown, third-party stubbing, and database and message assertion probes.
• Define test classification and CI/CD strategies across component, contract, API, end-to-end, UI, regression, and performance testing.
• Own isolated test data management across UI automation, APIs, and databases to support safe parallel execution.
• Design Azure DevOps quality gates and improve test speed, reliability, and flakiness.
• Pair with engineers, review code, establish testing standards, and help squads become self-sufficient.
• Investigate production incidents and test failures, maintain regression coverage, represent quality engineering in architecture forums, and use automation metrics to drive improvements.

Requirements

• Senior or Principal-level experience building test automation or quality engineering frameworks.
• Strong TypeScript and Playwright experience, with Maestro or similar mobile testing experience.
• Working proficiency in C# and .NET, including xUnit or NUnit component and integration testing.
• Experience with Docker, Testcontainers or equivalent, service virtualisation, HTTP stubbing, contract testing, and event-driven systems.
• Experience with test data isolation, SQL Server, CI/CD quality gates, Azure DevOps, authentication flows, Entra ID, and test credentials.
• Ability to influence technical direction across squads and develop engineers through pairing and code review.

Nice to have

• Experience with Pact, WireMock, MassTransit, RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, Kubernetes, k6, NBomber, and accessibility testing.
