Test Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: Portsmouth or Stevenage, United Kingdom; hybrid working with occasional travel.

What you will do

• Design, code, and maintain scalable test automation software in Python and Java.
• Develop automated routines for instrument control, DUT sequencing, data acquisition, and result-file generation for RF and digital space equipment.
• Design, build, and deploy complex test sites for satellite and space equipment.
• Produce architectural blueprints, technical specifications, API documentation, and system design guidelines.
• Establish practices for code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, and technical debt management.
• Support the evolution of future high-performance engineering test platforms.

Requirements

• Experience testing instruments, systems, software, and devices, including understanding of DUT, EUT, and UUT terminology.
• Hands-on proficiency in Python and solid commercial experience with Java.
• Experience automating tests for instruments, equipment, and control interfaces, typically in space, automotive, scientific, aerospace, or similar environments.
• Strong focus on test-system stability, instrument-control accuracy, robust error handling, and reliable automated software.
• Proficiency with NoSQL databases, especially MongoDB; similar databases such as Cassandra, Couchbase, or CouchDB are also relevant.
• Understanding of software design patterns, system architectures, test hardware and software automation, and basic PC and LAN configuration.

Nice to have

• Experience in space, automotive, scientific, aerospace, or a similar technical domain.
• STEM returner background is welcomed.
