Backend Engineer (ClickHouse)

Location: Remote within the United States; listed locations are New York, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, and Washington D.C.

What you will do

• Own and optimize the Langfuse ingestion pipeline for massive volumes of AI tracing data.
• Design ClickHouse schemas, optimize merge strategies and batch inserts, and write and review analytical queries.
• Build infrastructure-heavy features such as asynchronous LLM-as-a-Judge processing, large-scale alerting, client-code execution, and batch dataset operations.
• Run load tests against production data and compare schema, migration, and query changes before deployment.
• Operate Langfuse Cloud across production environments and improve self-hosting from Docker Compose to enterprise-grade Helm deployments.
• Plan infrastructure for complex long-running agent observability and real-time evaluation at 10x scale.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience with database internals, query optimization, and distributed systems.
• Experience with analytical databases, data pipelines, or high-throughput event processing.
• Comfortable reading and writing TypeScript and SQL.
• Ability to organize work independently and make strong decisions about what to build and how to ship it.
• Interest in open-source software and enjoyment of discussing scaling challenges with users.
• Computer science or quantitative degree preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience with ClickHouse, other OLAP databases, or observability infrastructure.
• Experience building data-intensive systems at scale.
• Former founder experience.
