Engineering Lead, PayIn (Fintech)

Location: Remote within the United States; company location in Miami, Florida

What you will do

• Lead, hire, develop, and retain a distributed engineering team responsible for business-critical PayIn systems.
• Scale payment acceptance across APIs, recurring billing, invoices, payment links, hosted pages, virtual terminals, embedded checkout, digital wallets, and card-present devices.
• Own batching, funding, transfers, same-day ACH, and reconciliation across card, ACH, and check-processing partners.
• Partner with Product to prioritize the roadmap, sequence delivery, and make explicit technical and business tradeoffs.
• Define SLOs, observability, incident practices, architecture documentation, runbooks, and on-call processes.
• Partner with AI and Risk Engineering to ship real-time risk scoring, anomaly detection, dispute handling, and exception-management workflows.

Requirements

• 10+ years building and operating production backend systems, including 3+ years leading engineering teams responsible for critical services.
• Required experience with payment acceptance, gateways, acquiring, funding, card payments, ACH, or related payment systems.
• Deep hands-on backend experience with distributed systems, relational databases, background processing, and cloud services.
• Experience designing and evolving RESTful and event-driven APIs, including versioning, backward compatibility, idempotency, and webhooks.
• Experience scaling teams and systems while improving reliability, quality, delivery, metrics, SLOs, and incident response.
• Clear communication, strong technical judgment, and the ability to influence engineers, product managers, partners, and sales stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Direct integrations with card processors and acquirers, including settlement and funding files.
• Card-present systems, Tap to Pay, SoftPOS, device management, or check processing using lockbox, X9, or remote deposit capture.
• Deep familiarity with ACH and NACHA rules, same-day ACH, returns, SEC codes, surcharging, split funding, or recurring billing.
• Familiarity with PCI DSS, tokenization, vertical SaaS, embedded payments, and distributed teams across time zones.
