Engineering Manager, Backend - International (Golang/Ruby)

Location: New York City office or Remote - International; hybrid work is indicated for the New York office.

Base wage: $205,000–$261,500 per year for the New York City office. Compensation may vary by location and candidate factors.

What you will do

• Lead and oversee a team of software engineers as a player-coach, combining people management with hands-on technical contribution.
• Prioritize, schedule, and deliver projects in partnership with Engineering, Design, and Product.
• Define long-term strategy, quarterly roadmaps, goals, and success measurements.
• Coordinate with engineering and cross-functional teams to identify requirements and improvement opportunities.
• Mentor, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing engineering team.
• Guide technical decisions and improve internal workflows and user experiences.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications.
• At least 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
• Experience prioritizing, developing, and delivering plans.
• Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Solid knowledge of data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common web development patterns.
• Experience with technologies including Golang, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, MySQL, Kafka, AWS, Git, Memcache, Redis, Elasticsearch, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, CircleCI, and Datadog.
