Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Santa Clara, California, United States

Base salary: $150,000–$172,000 annually, plus a target 10% annual bonus, equity, and cash and non-cash benefits.

What you will do

• Architect, design, and lead implementation of complex backend systems and services supporting core product experiences at scale.
• Define technical strategy, system design decisions, technology choices, and long-term architectural direction.
• Own reliability and performance for critical services through SLOs, monitoring, incident response, and operational best practices.
• Design scalable API frameworks and data models for product teams and external integrations.
• Lead cross-functional initiatives with frontend, infrastructure, product, and design stakeholders.
• Drive large-scale refactoring, improve engineering standards, and mentor engineers through design and code reviews.

Requirements

• 3–6 years of experience building and operating production backend systems at scale.
• Expertise in at least one modern backend language, such as Python, Ruby, Go, Java, or Node.js.
• Experience designing distributed systems, including service decomposition, data consistency, fault tolerance, and observability.
• Strong experience with relational and NoSQL databases, schema design, query optimization, caching, asynchronous messaging, and event-driven architectures.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Deep practical proficiency with AI development tools, LLMs, agentic AI systems, AI/ML fundamentals, and AI integration considerations including cost, latency, reliability, and security.

Nice to have

• Experience operating systems serving millions of concurrent users with strict latency and availability requirements.
• Expertise in microservices, CQRS, event sourcing, or domain-driven design.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure, including serverless architectures, managed services, and cost optimization.
• Experience building platform APIs, SDKs, or developer tools.
• Experience improving engineering culture through RFCs, architecture reviews, or technical writing.
