Laboratory Animal Technician (Gnotobiotic Animals)

Location: Heidelberg, Germany; campus-based, onsite. Participation in the weekend duty rotation is obligatory.

Salary: Grade 3 or 4, starting from €3,534.47 net per month, excluding pension and health insurance contributions; monthly salary depends on experience and training.

What you will do

• Supervise users, laboratory animal technicians and scientists working with germ-free colonies, including scheduling, resource allocation and holiday coverage.
• Oversee daily germ-free colony operations in isolators, including husbandry, care, cage inventory, animal transfers, procurement and record-keeping.
• Provide care for germ-free and gnotobiotic mice, prepare and sterilise supplies, and support process validation and quality control.
• Perform microbial colonisation experiments, tissue collection, microbial testing using diagnostic PCR and bacterial culturing, and animal health surveillance activities.
• Coordinate scientific experiments and support investigators with planning, execution, monitoring, documentation and experimental techniques.
• Manage equipment maintenance, repairs, supplies, consumables and compliance with applicable regulations, SOPs, IACUC directions and animal welfare policies.

Requirements

• Training or certification as a laboratory animal technician.
• At least 3 years of experience in an animal facility in a similar role.
• Function A, C and D qualifications under European Directive 2010/63/EU.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with reliability, attention to detail and flexibility.
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build trust, and a professional approach to handling and resolving conflicts.
• Very good organisational skills and excellent problem-solving skills.
• Ability to lead a diverse team in a challenging environment.
• Professional working English communication skills.
• Computer skills.

• Additional computer skills are desirable.
