Senior Virtualisation Engineer/Infrastructure Migration Specialist

Location: Rijswijk, Netherlands; the assignment is performed almost entirely on-site at the customer's location in Den Helder, with remote work kept to an absolute minimum.

What you will do

• Create bit-accurate, sector-level images of physical legacy machines and preserve operating systems, disk structures, configurations, and application dependencies.
• Migrate physical Windows XP and Windows 7 installations to virtual machines while resolving driver, hardware, storage, networking, and peripheral compatibility issues.
• Configure and optimise production virtual machines on Proxmox and/or VMware ESXi, including CPU pinning, COM-port emulation, time synchronisation, and I/O scheduling.
• Implement enterprise backup and monitoring for business-critical systems and validate recovery procedures.
• Document and test repeatable recovery scenarios that can be executed by personnel without specialist engineering knowledge.
• Maintain infrastructure changes, imaging, configuration management, backup operations, and recovery testing in compliance with Dutch Ministry of Defense security procedures.

Requirements

• Demonstrable experience with bit-accurate, sector-level imaging of physical legacy machines, including unstable or ageing storage media.
• Proven experience migrating Windows XP and Windows 7 installations to virtual machines and resolving hardware-dependent compatibility issues.
• Hands-on production experience with Proxmox and/or VMware ESXi and advanced virtual machine optimisation.
• Experience with enterprise backup, monitoring, tested recovery procedures, and documentation for critical systems.
• Ability to work on-site in Den Helder with remote work kept to an absolute minimum.
• Willingness and eligibility to undergo Dutch Ministry of Defense security screening, including a VOG or additional required screening, and to work in an internet-isolated environment handling information classified at least Restricted.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-availability architectures, virtual machine replication, and failover configurations.
• Familiarity with disaster recovery planning and recovery-time requirements for critical operational systems.
