Head of Data Governance & Enterprise Context Eng (AI)

Location: Remote in the United States, with locations listed as San Francisco or Seattle

Salary: $197,955–$311,375 base pay annually, depending on geographic pay zone

What you will do

• Own the enterprise data governance operating model, including domain ownership, decision rights, governance councils, stewardship, classification, access, retention, and acceptable use.
• Partner with Privacy, Legal, Security, Compliance, Analytics, Data Science, Engineering, and Product Management.
• Set the technical strategy and architecture for data catalogs, metadata, lineage, semantic layers, ontologies, and knowledge graphs.
• Build enterprise context connecting business entities with ownership, lineage, and quality signals for programmatic consumption by agents and applications.
• Shift governance left through data contracts, automated classification at ingest, policy-as-code, and continuously assessed AI-readiness controls.
• Drive adoption and data quality across a federated organization, including teams outside the reporting line.

Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in data engineering, data platforms, or data management, including data strategy, architecture, governance, and platform development.
• 8+ years leading data engineering teams, including senior and principal-level architects.
• Experience scaling an enterprise data catalog or metadata platform such as DataHub or Unity Catalog.
• Experience owning data governance end to end, including policy, stewardship, classification, data quality, and audit-ready controls.
• Technical depth in SQL, Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, dbt, orchestration, streaming/CDC, DevOps, CI/CD, observability, monitoring, lineage, services, and RESTful APIs.
• Working fluency with GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, SOX, SOC 2, RBAC/ABAC, masking, tokenization, and purpose limitation, plus a graduate degree in Computer Science, Information Management, or a similar field.

Nice to have

• Experience applying LLMs to metadata generation, classification, entity resolution, or data-quality anomaly triage.
• SaaS experience with multi-tenant customer data, tenant isolation, and data residency.
• Experience with responsible AI programs or frameworks such as NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, or the EU AI Act.
• DAMA-DMBOK, CDMP, CIPP, or CIPT certification, or contributions to open-source projects.
