Assistant General Counsel - Special Assets (Hybrid in Buffalo, NY)

Location: Hybrid in Buffalo, New York, United States; four days per week in-office at One M&T Plaza and one day per week remote

Salary: $139,700–$232,900 annual, USD

What you will do

• Provide strategic legal advice and opinions to assigned business units and respond to day-to-day business questions.
• Advise on existing products, new product design, geographic expansion, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Represent the organization in litigation matters and collaborate with outside legal counsel.
• Draft, review, and advise on regulatory disclosures, marketing materials, licensing statutes, and other business documents.
• Develop and interpret departmental policies, research legal issues, and recommend new procedures.
• Identify legal and regulatory risks, escalate issues, and provide guidance to junior staff and paralegals.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• At least four years of experience as an attorney or in relevant legal work.
• New York State or applicable state bar admission required.
• Ability to identify legal issues, evaluate risks, and recommend practical solutions.
• Strong negotiation, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, writing, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work four days per week in the Buffalo office.

Nice to have

• Experience reviewing and analyzing credit or loan agreements, forbearance agreements, and loan modifications.
• Experience in commercial bankruptcy or workout matters.
