Staff Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote within Spain or France; hybrid work is available from the Paris or Barcelona offices.

What you will do

• Drive technical strategy and architecture across engineering teams.
• Design scalable services, distributed systems, shared capabilities, and product-facing backend services.
• Own complex cross-team technical problems from framing through implementation, covering data models, APIs, networking, and infrastructure.
• Establish architectural standards and balance scalability, reliability, complexity, and delivery speed.
• Improve system reliability and observability while contributing hands-on production code and technical reviews.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with Backend, Data, Product, DevOps, and Engineering leadership.

Requirements

• Extensive backend engineering experience, particularly with Python.
• Experience designing and evolving distributed systems at scale for millions of users or similarly complex workloads.
• Ability to lead technical initiatives across multiple teams without formal authority.
• Strong understanding of architecture, domain boundaries, data ownership, service interfaces, APIs, networking, and infrastructure.
• Experience making pragmatic technical trade-offs and handling ambiguous problems with ownership.
• Professionally proficient English and availability to work remotely from Spain or France, or hybrid from Paris or Barcelona.

Nice to have

• Django experience.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, AWS, messaging systems, and modern data or infrastructure tooling.
• Interest in AI-assisted engineering workflows and helping build AI-native engineering practices.
