Senior Backend Engineer Twake Mail (Java)

Location: Full remote in France, or office-based work at Île Saint-Germain in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France

What you will do

• Build and maintain public code in Apache James and the TMail backend.
• Implement JMAP and its extensions for modern, feature-rich email experiences.
• Develop distributed mail infrastructure using Cassandra, S3, OpenSearch, and RabbitMQ.
• Build features and optimizations for Twake Mail and Twake Calendar production deployments.
• Contribute improvements upstream to Apache and participate in the open-source ecosystem.

Requirements

• Senior-level Java development experience and the ability to read and write Scala.
• Experience working in large codebases and strong interest in distributed systems and protocols.
• Knowledge of or practical experience with IMAP, SMTP, JMAP, CalDAV, CardDAV, and OpenID Connect.
• Understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases, performance at scale, and Kubernetes.
• Autonomous ownership of technical topics and a results-oriented approach to shipping production software.
• English is the working language, and the role is available remotely only from France or from the Issy-les-Moulineaux office.
