Linux Systems Engineer

Location: Onsite in Sterling, Virginia, United States.

Salary: $122,000–$253,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications, relevant experience, and expertise.

What you will do

• Design, deploy, administer, maintain, and optimize enterprise Linux environments, including hardened operating system configurations and baseline builds.
• Perform operating system upgrades, patch management, lifecycle maintenance, performance optimization, and troubleshooting of operating system, networking, and application issues.
• Configure and troubleshoot routing, VLANs, trunking, network namespaces, VRFs, NAT, firewall policies, and network traffic using tcpdump, Wireshark, iproute2, nftables, and iptables.
• Design, deploy, support, and harden VPN infrastructures using OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IPSec, including troubleshooting encryption, routing, MTU, and performance issues.
• Automate system provisioning, configuration deployment, compliance enforcement, VPN deployments, and security baseline management using SaltStack, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring platforms.
• Collaborate with engineering, systems administration, and platform engineering teams; document configurations, procedures, troubleshooting steps, knowledge base articles, and best practices.

Requirements

• Current active TS/SCI clearance with the ability to pass a CI polygraph.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of technical training and hands-on experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Debian and Ubuntu Linux.
• Experience with dynamic and static routing, VLANs, trunking, NAT, and firewall policies.
• Experience with WireGuard, OpenVPN 2.6+, IPSec, PKI, and certificate management.
• Experience with Bash, Git, and CI/CD workflows.
• Exceptional troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capabilities, strong documentation and technical writing skills, and the ability to work independently in mission-critical environments.
• Security-first infrastructure design principles and excellent collaboration and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience supporting confidential computing environments.
• RHCE, LFCE, CCNP, or equivalent advanced industry certification.
