Chief Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: 100% remote within the Continental United States

What you will do

• Define enterprise-level architecture standards, system design principles, API governance, and engineering guardrails across multiple business units.
• Lead the design and implementation of highly scalable, fault-tolerant, multi-region distributed systems.
• Drive modernization initiatives, including microservices transformation, platform consolidation, and legacy system decommissioning.
• Establish standards for data architecture, observability, monitoring, DevOps, CI/CD, and automation.
• Lead reliability improvements, performance audits, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and critical production issue resolution.
• Partner with executive leadership and product management on technology strategy while mentoring Staff and Senior Engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
• At least 10 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven experience designing and operating high-scale distributed systems in production.
• Advanced proficiency in Java, Go, C++, or a similar backend language.
• Deep expertise in data modeling, system optimization, performance tuning, reliability engineering, and distributed architectures.
• Must work as a full-time W2 employee in the Continental United States; new H1B sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Public technical contributions, including papers, talks, or open-source leadership.
• Experience driving multi-year technology transformation programs.
• Familiarity with FinOps and large-scale cost optimization.
• Experience in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, or government.
• Advanced degree or equivalent industry recognition.
