Backend Engineer (Genomics)

Location: Remote from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, or Argentina. Work schedule: EST with flexible hours and US overlap.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain RESTful backend APIs with Node.js, TypeScript, and Fastify.
• Define API contracts and data shapes with the frontend engineer before implementation.
• Develop reproducible and recoverable pipelines for large, inconsistent genomic data inputs, including parsing third-party vendor outputs.
• Design PostgreSQL schemas and data models for genomic and health data.
• Architect AWS infrastructure, secure storage, deployment workflows, authentication, authorization, and access controls.
• Apply encryption, healthcare security, and data governance requirements to sensitive health data.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience, including building backend systems from scratch at an early-stage startup.
• Production experience with Node.js and TypeScript for RESTful APIs.
• Experience building large-data pipelines with reproducibility and failure recovery.
• PostgreSQL schema design, data modeling, AWS deployment, and infrastructure experience.
• Experience implementing authentication and authorization with AWS Cognito, Auth0, or OAuth.
• English at C1+ CEFR level for daily collaboration with the frontend lead and firm leadership.

Nice to have

• Bioinformatics or genomic data processing experience.
• AWS CDK or CloudFormation infrastructure-as-code experience.
• Fastify, healthcare, regulated-industry, or Next.js experience.
