Senior Backend Engineer (Go/Tempo)

Location: Remote; candidates must be based in Canada or the United States

hirify.global develops Grafana Cloud, an open-source-based observability platform used to monitor applications and infrastructure at scale.

What you will do

• Deliver complex, multi-month technical projects for the Tempo distributed tracing backend.
• Own components across ingestion, storage, query execution, and metrics generation.
• Design structured, deterministic APIs for Grafana products, LLM-driven assistants, and external integrators.
• Improve performance, autoscaling, rollout safety, customer limits, and operational efficiency across multi-cell infrastructure.
• Collaborate with Product and sibling teams to support App Observability, Asserts, Drilldown, and Grafana Assistant.
• Mentor engineers, participate in on-call and incident response, and contribute to the Tempo open-source project.

Requirements

• Experience delivering complex, multi-month projects from design through production operations.
• Significant experience building and operating distributed data systems, ingestion pipelines, storage engines, or query execution systems.
• Strong software craftsmanship and experience writing clean, robust, performant software.
• Strong Go experience or transferable systems-language experience with Rust, C, or C++.
• Experience owning production services, working with pagers, reducing operational toil, and using SLOs.
• Clear written communication and effective collaboration in a fully remote, asynchronous environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems.
• Experience with query languages, SQL- or TraceQL-like engines, programmatic APIs, columnar storage, or analytical data formats.
• Experience operating multi-tenant, multi-cell SaaS infrastructure on Kubernetes.
• Experience building structured APIs and evaluation systems for AI or LLM consumers.
• Open-source contribution, Grafana ecosystem experience, or experience in a globally distributed team.
