Senior Software Engineer (Distributed Databases)

Location: In-office in Austin, TX; Seattle, WA; or London, UK

What you will do

• Improve query planning and execution, including index selection, row reads and writes, and performance at changing data volumes and access patterns.
• Build transaction and storage paths that provide durable writes, consistent reads, correct visibility, failure recovery, and reliable commits.
• Design deterministic simulations and workload tests to reproduce rare event orderings, concurrency issues, and distributed-system failures.
• Plan and execute stateful upgrades through staged rollout, failover, and recovery without putting existing data at risk.
• Own major changes from design through production, coordinate work across teams, and participate in on-call and incident response.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, debugging, and incident analysis involving concurrency, durability, and recovery.

Requirements

• Experience owning a database, storage engine, transaction system, or similarly correctness-sensitive stateful system from architecture through production.
• Strong understanding of query execution, indexing, transaction processing, concurrency control, isolation, replication, snapshots, consistency, durability, and recovery.
• Ability to write and debug concurrent production software in Rust, Go, C++, or another systems language.
• Experience operating stateful systems through rollouts, scaling events, incidents, and recovery, including tracing failures across process, network, and durable-state boundaries.
• Experience leading investigations involving failures across systems owned by multiple teams.
• Availability for in-office work in Austin, Seattle, or London, with an in-person interview potentially required at a hirify.global office or hub.

Nice to have

• Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Amazon Aurora, or another relational database.
• Experience defining snapshot visibility and recovery behavior in transaction processing or concurrency control.
• Experience profiling database workloads and tracing performance bottlenecks through durable storage.
• Experience using deterministic simulation to uncover distributed-systems bugs.
