Staff Engineer – Distributed Storage & Transactions (C/C++)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; hybrid work with the team in the Sunnyvale office 2–3 days per week

Cash compensation: USD 150,000–250,000 per year, inclusive of variable or incentive compensation for some roles; equity may also apply.

What you will do

• Lead the design, development, testing, and delivery of core distributed storage and replication features.
• Write high-quality C/C++ code, create automated tests, participate in design discussions, and conduct code reviews.
• Diagnose and resolve correctness, stability, and performance issues in distributed storage and transactional subsystems.
• Improve database scalability and throughput as cluster sizes, data volumes, and transaction rates grow.
• Build database management operations including horizontal scale-out, incremental and point-in-time backups, online schema and index operations, rolling upgrades, and blue-green deployments.
• Contribute to the open-source hirify.globalDB project and mentor engineers in distributed systems, performance engineering, and systems debugging.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong systems programming skills in C/C++.
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including replication, consensus, transactions, consistency models, fault tolerance, and recovery.
• Experience with storage engines, databases, or infrastructure-level systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a distributed team environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed storage systems, transactional engines, or consensus protocols.
• Familiarity with LSM-tree storage engines, WALs, snapshots, or compaction strategies.
• Experience with PostgreSQL internals or other relational database engines.
• Contributions to open-source systems or database projects.
