Functional Expert II (AI)

Location: Onsite in Arlington, Virginia, United States. Travel may include locations within and outside the continental United States, including occasional international travel.

Salary: $150,000–$180,000 per year

What you will do

• Provide senior program and technical leadership for DARPA MXO research across engineering, AI and machine learning, advanced hardware, and other emerging technology areas.
• Evaluate hardware-informed AI and ML concepts, new computing approaches, and engineering solutions against program objectives and mission needs.
• Guide program planning, technical reviews, risk analysis, test strategy, financial execution, and technology transition.
• Assess performer progress through reviews, site visits, laboratory results, tests, demonstrations, and other program events.
• Advise DARPA program managers and coordinate with performers, Government partners, test organizations, and transition stakeholders.
• Prepare technical assessments, review briefings, decision materials, trip reports, and other program documentation.

Requirements

• Master’s degree and 12 or more years of relevant experience.
• U.S. citizenship required for security-clearance eligibility.
• Senior program-management experience with regulatory-compliance responsibility in complex R&D environments.
• Experience managing large defense R&D efforts, multidisciplinary technical teams, and senior stakeholder relationships.
• Depth in engineering and AI or machine learning, including the relationship between algorithms, hardware, data, and mission performance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical and executive audiences.

Nice to have

• Seven or more years of DARPA program experience.
• Five or more years working directly with DARPA program managers.
• Experience with unconventional computing, photonic or RF systems, AI-enabled hardware, or technology transition.
