Systems Engineer - Compute (HPC)

Location: Austin, Texas, United States, or South San Francisco, California, United States

Base salary: $83,000–$138,000 USD per year, plus equity compensation for full-time employees.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate data center environments, including power, cooling, racking, capacity planning, and floor-space management.
• Own the server and storage lifecycle from hardware procurement and rack installation through commissioning, maintenance, and decommissioning.
• Administer HPC and GPU clusters, high-performance storage, Linux and Windows servers, monitoring, and alerting systems.
• Automate bare-metal provisioning and configuration using PXE/HTTP boot, Bash, PowerShell, Python, Terraform, Ansible, and Puppet.
• Coordinate maintenance windows, upgrades, expansions, and 24/7 on-call readiness for compute and storage incidents.
• Maintain infrastructure documentation, runbooks, rack and power diagrams, hardware inventories, and DCIM records.

Requirements

• Experience building and supporting HPC or high-density compute environments, including GPU clusters and high-performance storage.
• Hands-on experience with data center power, cooling, racking design, and operations.
• Strong Linux server administration experience and working knowledge of Windows Server.
• Experience with PXE/HTTP boot, Terraform, Ansible, or Puppet, plus familiarity with DCIM and monitoring tools such as Prometheus or Grafana.
• Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and NTP for server deployment and troubleshooting.
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with Slurm, LSF, PBS, virtualization platforms, NAS/SAN, NFS/iSCSI, or liquid-cooled GPU racks.
• Exposure to real-time systems, industrial telemetry, GitLab CI/CD infrastructure pipelines, or relevant data center and Linux certifications.
