Principal Engineer - Systems (Unix Systems Administrator)

Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States. The role involves on-premises infrastructure and requires U.S. citizenship or qualifying U.S. permanent residency/protected-individual status for export-control compliance. Travel: 0%–25%.

Annual base salary: $75,000–$232,000, plus potential bonuses, restricted stock, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, deploy, and maintain enterprise Linux and FreeBSD environments on bare-metal, on-premises, and cloud platforms.
• Engineer system hardening and mandatory access controls using SELinux and custom policies.
• Apply and maintain DISA STIG and CIS Benchmark security baselines without disrupting production workloads.
• Architect and manage secure enclaves for processing and storing Controlled Unclassified Information under CMMC requirements.
• Secure virtualized environments and containerized workloads.
• Automate patching, configuration management, and compliance auditing with Ansible and related tools; troubleshoot kernel-, hypervisor-, network-, and storage-level issues.

Requirements

• 10+ years of hands-on enterprise system administration experience with Linux and/or FreeBSD.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related technical field.
• Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI U.S. Government Security Clearance.
• Practical experience with SELinux, DISA STIGs, CIS Benchmarks, CMMC, and CUI security controls.
• Experience managing operating systems on bare-metal hardware and in scalable cloud environments.
• Foundational knowledge of virtualization technologies and containerization runtimes.

Nice to have

• RHCE, RHCSA, LFCE, LFCS, CompTIA Linux+, BSDA, or BSDP certification.
• CISSP, CASP+, or CompTIA Security+ certification.
• AWS SysOps Administrator, AWS Security Specialty, or Certified Kubernetes Administrator certification.
