High Voltage Systems Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Southfield, Michigan, United States; onsite engineering role

Develops automotive and industrial electronic products, including high-voltage busbars, Battery Disconnect Units, Integrated Circuit Boards, sensors, power distribution solutions, and related vehicle components.

What you will do

• Architect, design, and optimize 800V DC-DC converters, onboard chargers, and traction inverters using SiC and GaN semiconductors.
• Design high-frequency planar transformers and inductors, optimizing power density, leakage inductance, and interwinding capacitance.
• Integrate high-power distribution boards, multilayer PCBs, and control circuits into vehicle powertrain or grid systems.
• Perform thermal analysis and develop liquid cooling, forced-air, phase-change, and thermal-interface solutions.
• Run circuit simulations, stress modeling, and electromagnetic FEA, then lead high-power hardware validation.
• Guide cross-functional teams and resolve power-flow instability, EMI/EMC, copper-loss, and component-failure issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience developing high-voltage systems above 60V, ideally 400V–800V+.
• Expertise in switching topologies, gate drivers, planar transformer construction, multilayer PCB windings, and ferrite or nanocrystalline cores.
• Experience with thermal management for high-power-density electronics, including liquid cooling, forced air, or phase-change cooling.
• Knowledge of IPC-2221, IPC-9592, ISO 26262, ASIL ratings, and relevant automotive safety frameworks.
• Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSpice, ANSYS Maxwell or similar tools, plus high-power laboratory equipment; experience guiding junior engineers.
