Software Engineer - Java (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid role based in Cambridge, United Kingdom

What you will do

• Design and develop ecommerce payment gateway solutions using Java, SQL, and PL/SQL.
• Build and maintain secure, robust, distributed applications for a 24/7 service targeting five-nines uptime.
• Collaborate with software and quality assurance engineers through code reviews, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
• Work with engineers in the UK and US and contribute across the full software development lifecycle.
• Support releases and deployments outside normal office hours when periodically required.
• Contribute to retrospectives, technical debt reduction, continuous delivery, and improvements to engineering practices.

Requirements

• Experience building secure, clean, and testable Java-based distributed applications in a Linux environment.
• Strong understanding of relational databases, particularly Oracle, including DDL and SQL.
• Knowledge of software architecture, industry design patterns, version control, and large codebases.
• Experience with Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, REST APIs, Spring Boot, JBoss, J2EE, JSP, Servlets, and Gradle or Maven.
• Experience with Linux development and production environments, basic networking, Git, and GitHub.
• Ability to collaborate effectively, prioritize under pressure, and contribute to continuous improvement.

Nice to have

• Payment technology experience, including APACS, IFSF, or Google Pay.
• Experience with C/C++, Angular, AlpineJS, Bootstrap, TypeScript, containers, testing tools, cloud platforms, or CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of TLS, PKI, authentication, security scanning, cryptography, and secure inter-application communication.
• Experience with high-availability, high-capacity, mission-critical systems and agile frameworks such as Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe.
• Interest in innovation, behavioural-driven development, and applying AI tools in day-to-day work.
