Payroll Manager - Europe (Fintech)

What you will do

• Own end-to-end payroll across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland, with possible additional scope for Bulgaria.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing, including tax, statutory registrations, employment changes, benefits, bonuses, commissions, and variable pay.
• Stabilize global payroll operations in Deel, complete remaining country migrations, and maintain accurate employee data across HR, payroll, finance, commission, and benefits systems.
• Design and maintain payroll governance, controls, approval frameworks, RACI structures, SOPs, calendars, and audit-ready documentation.
• Partner with Finance, Accounting, Tax, HR Operations, Country Managers, Deel, and senior leadership on reporting, audits, statutory filings, risks, and complex cross-border issues.
• Lead, develop, and coach the payroll team while managing vendor governance, SLAs, and recurring issue resolution.

Requirements

• 10+ years of payroll experience, including substantial international, multi-country European payroll experience and several years in a leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of payroll tax, statutory compliance, labour law interactions, and registration requirements for new hires, leavers, and job changes.
• Experience with commission-heavy or variable-pay structures and global payroll platforms; Deel experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience stabilizing and optimizing payroll operations after a system implementation and maintaining governance, controls, and approval frameworks.
• Experience in regulated environments such as fintech, financial services, or payments is a significant advantage.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, is required. Additional European languages are an advantage.
