Senior Backend Engineer (AI / Machine Learning)

Location: Fully remote within Europe, with preference for candidates in Croatia or elsewhere in Europe. The majority of working hours must overlap with 9 am–5 pm CET.

Salary: €3,000–€4,000 gross per month, depending on experience.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and deploy production-grade machine learning features and dedicated AI/ML services.
• Build data pipelines for ML models, analytics, and intelligent product features.
• Develop internal gRPC and external REST APIs, integrating and serving models within scalable backend systems and microservices.
• Define evaluation criteria, test datasets, monitoring, tracing, quality metrics, safeguards, and fallback behavior for AI-powered features.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, QA, design, DevOps, and client stakeholders to deliver practical AI solutions.
• Deploy, monitor, optimize, and maintain ML-powered services in AWS cloud environments from discovery through production iteration.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend development experience with Python and preferably Java Spring Boot.
• Hands-on experience building and deploying production machine learning features, data pipelines, model-serving systems, APIs, and backend integrations.
• Experience with ML/data libraries, MLOps workflows, databases, data processing, and structured or unstructured data.
• Familiarity with microservices architecture, modern Java backend practices, and AWS cloud infrastructure.
• Professional fluency in English is required for communication with international teams and clients.
• Ability to work remotely from Europe and maintain substantial overlap with CET working hours.

Nice to have

• Experience with NLP, RAG, LLMs, recommendation systems, prediction models, vector databases, embeddings, agentic AI, tool calling, or workflow orchestration.
• Spanish language skills for work related to the Latin American market.
• Experience evaluating AI/ML systems through automated tests, offline evaluations, production metrics, and human feedback.
