TL;DR
Associate Scientist I, Research (Bacterial Conjugate Vaccines): Characterizing bacterial polysaccharide conjugate vaccine intermediates and drug substances using bioanalytical and chromatographic assays with an accent on proteins, polysaccharides, conjugates, and reproducible laboratory execution. Focus on independently performing HPLC-SEC, SEC-MALS, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, and colorimetric assays, maintaining traceable records, and supporting method development and troubleshooting.

Location: San Carlos, California, United States; onsite five days per week

Salary: $86,500–$101,000 per year

What you will do

  • Perform analytical assays to characterize proteins, polysaccharides, and polysaccharide-protein conjugates.
  • Execute HPLC-SEC, RP-HPLC, SEC-MALS, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, ELISA, and colorimetric assays.
  • Prepare buffers, reagents, samples, equipment, and laboratory supplies, including large-volume buffers and autoclaved materials.
  • Analyze results, identify unexpected findings, report data accurately, and communicate technical issues.
  • Maintain complete laboratory records in notebooks, Benchling, and other designated systems.
  • Support analytical method development, qualification, troubleshooting, sample testing, and routine laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, with 0–2 years of relevant industry experience; alternatively, a master’s degree with at least 1 year of experience.
  • Hands-on experience with bioanalytical techniques, including SDS-PAGE.
  • Foundational understanding of analytical method development, qualification, and validation.
  • Ability to independently follow established protocols, recognize unexpected results, and seek guidance when needed.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work onsite in San Carlos five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Agilent HPLC and OpenLab or ChemStation software.
  • Experience with Wyatt Technology MALS and dRI detectors and ASTRA software.
  • Experience working with proteins, polysaccharides, and protein-polysaccharide conjugates.
  • Experience with chemical and biological colorimetric microplate assays.
