Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Full-time onsite role in Sunnyvale, California, United States; remote and hybrid options are not available. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

A retail technology organization building software, data science, cybersecurity, and service solutions that support large-scale e-commerce operations and customer experiences.

What you will do

• Design and build high-throughput, low-latency services for offer selection and pricing at scale.
• Build and evolve streaming and batch pipelines using Kafka, Flink, BigQuery, and Airflow to feed algorithms and AI/ML models.
• Partner with data scientists to productionize machine learning models and measure customer impact through A/B testing.
• Build with AI agents and AI-assisted development, and help shape their use within the team.
• Lead design and code reviews and improve the delivery flow from pull request through build and canary deployment.
• Build decision-quality tooling, including flip analysis, parity testing, experiment dashboards, and cross-team technical solutions for Search, Item Page, and Recommendations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 3 years of software engineering experience; or 5 years of software engineering or related experience.
• 5+ years of production software development experience, including 3+ years with Java and/or Python.
• Strong foundation in distributed systems, data structures, and algorithms.
• Experience building and operating highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable microservices with REST and/or GraphQL.
• Hands-on experience with streaming systems such as Kafka or Flink.
• Experience with a public cloud platform, GCP or AWS.
• Ability to own ambiguous problems end to end and drive design decisions across teams.
• Ability to explain complex technical ideas clearly to engineers and non-engineers.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 1 year of software engineering experience.
• Experience building production-grade AI/ML systems.
• Experience with experimentation platforms and A/B testing at scale.
• Familiarity with BigQuery, Airflow, or ML pipeline tooling such as TensorFlow or Kubeflow.
• Background in pricing, marketplaces, offer ranking, or e-commerce.
• Node or React experience for internal tooling.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
