TL;DR
Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer (ESP32): Building production firmware for connected devices across the full lifecycle, from schematic review and board bring-up to OTA deployment and certification, with an accent on wireless connectivity, low-level driver integration, and cloud communication. Focus on debugging complex interoperability issues across firmware, hardware, wireless, and cloud layers, integrating AWS IoT Core over MQTT, and delivering reliable production systems.

Location: Remote within Canada; candidates must reside in Canada and have proper Canadian work authorization. The role may require travel within the US for client engagements.

Base compensation: $126,500 CAD annually, commensurate with experience. Variable compensation is up to 10% annual performance bonus.

Company

hirify.global is a distributed technology consultancy that develops efficient, scalable connected-device solutions for commercial, industrial, and consumer products from pilot through production.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and maintain production firmware for ESP32-based connected devices using ESP-IDF.
  • Bring up hardware and integrate drivers for sensors, actuators, LEDs, and other peripherals.
  • Implement BLE provisioning, Wi-Fi connectivity, secure AWS IoT Core communication over MQTT, and reliable OTA updates with rollback and staged rollouts.
  • Debug issues across firmware, hardware, wireless, and cloud layers using tools such as JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, and protocol sniffers.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers, contract manufacturers, mobile teams, and backend teams on provisioning, telemetry, device data models, and production readiness.
  • Support EVT/DVT/PVT hardware builds, FCC certification, firmware CI/CD, test tooling, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of professional embedded or firmware engineering experience in C/C++.
  • Significant production experience with Espressif ESP32 and ESP-IDF, including RTOS-based development, OTA updates, low-level drivers, and interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, ADC, and GPIO.
  • Hands-on firmware experience with BLE, Wi-Fi, wireless connectivity, provisioning flows, and protocol-level interoperability debugging.
  • Experience connecting devices to AWS IoT Core using MQTT over TLS, certificate-based authentication, and device state synchronization.
  • Experience integrating sensors, actuators, and peripherals and translating technical specifications into production-quality firmware.
  • Must reside within Canada, hold proper Canadian work authorization, and be able to travel within the US as needed. Visa sponsorship is not provided.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Nordic nRF platforms, nRF Connect SDK, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or BLE Mesh.
  • Embedded security experience with secure boot, flash encryption, key management, device attestation, and secure firmware updates.
  • Experience with firmware CI/CD, automated test harnesses, Python test tooling, Protocol Buffers, or open-source ESP-IDF contributions.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers, factory flashing, EVT/DVT/PVT builds, FCC certification, and OTA rollout strategies.

Culture & Benefits

  • Fully distributed work environment with collaboration across remote and in-person settings.
  • Dedicated project assignment to support focus and minimize context switching.
  • Group RRSP match with employer contributions of 4% of annual income.
  • Extended healthcare, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Professional development stipend, MacBook Pro, cell/internet stipend, home office equipment stipend, and annual team retreat.
