Staff/Senior Staff Engineer (Developer Productivity)

Location: Hybrid, based at the San Francisco headquarters, United States

Base salary: $210,000–$235,000 annually, plus equity and company bonus.

What you will do

• Lead improvements to local development tooling, build and test systems, release automation, and the Backstage developer portal.
• Improve JavaScript and TypeScript build and test performance across webpack, Jest, Vitest, and Bazel, including remote caching and migration away from Nx.
• Build Kubernetes tooling that enables product teams to make routine application changes independently.
• Own the path from commit to production, including CI, Kargo-based environment promotion, verification, and rollback.
• Extend Backstage with plugins connecting deployment, monitoring, and incident data, while improving local development consistency.
• Set technical direction, lead adoption across teams, mentor engineers, communicate tradeoffs, and participate in the support rotation.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience for Staff level or 12+ years for Senior Staff level.
• At least 3 years of experience in SRE, infrastructure, build systems, CI/CD, or developer tooling.
• Deep experience with JavaScript and TypeScript build and test tools, including diagnosing slow builds and flaky tests at scale.
• Production experience with Kubernetes and containers on GCP, AWS, or Azure, plus CI systems such as CircleCI or GitHub Actions.
• Strong programming skills in TypeScript, Go, or Python, with comfort using shell scripting.
• Experience leading hands-on technical projects adopted across teams, along with strong written communication and experience creating technical documentation.

Nice to have

• Experience with Bazel or Nx and JavaScript or TypeScript monorepo migrations.
• Experience with Kargo, Argo CD, or other GitOps tooling.
• Experience building Backstage plugins.
• Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform or Pulumi.
