Senior Patent Counsel / Director, Intellectual Property (Biotech)

Salary: $286,300–$367,000 annually for Director, IP

What you will do

• Create, prosecute, and maintain global patent portfolios covering small molecules, large molecules, gene therapy, cellular programming, and computational biology.
• Draft and file patent applications and manage patent office proceedings, including inter partes reviews, reexaminations, post-grant reviews, and oppositions.
• Evaluate data for patentability and invention capture and conduct intellectual property due diligence.
• Advise business stakeholders on freedom to operate, patentability, regulatory exclusivities, and IP risks.
• Provide guidance on trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, and IP terms in collaboration with the transactional legal team.
• Manage outside counsel work product and budgets while building partnerships across business, legal, and compliance functions.

Requirements

• PhD in Chemistry or a related science.
• Registration before the United States Patent and Trademark Office is required.
• For lawyers: Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to the California Bar or eligibility to qualify as Registered In-House Counsel.
• 7+ or 12+ years of experience as a patent prosecutor, preferably across law firm and industry environments.
• Experience in global pharmaceutical drug development and commercialization is required.
• Strong judgment, integrity, collaboration, adaptability, and ability to make strategic IP decisions in ambiguous and emerging areas.
