Senior Software Engineer, Backend (AdTech)

Location: New York, United States — hybrid or remote

Base salary: $160,000–$180,000 annually, plus stock options.

What you will do

• Lead backend architecture and strategic engineering initiatives across programmatic advertising systems, including ad serving, OpenRTB, auctions, identity flows, and backend services.
• Drive complex backend projects from concept through production while balancing scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
• Design, implement, and troubleshoot integrations with SSPs, DSPs, exchanges, and other external advertising platforms.
• Optimize high-throughput, latency-sensitive auction and ad-serving workflows and improve observability, reliability, and system performance.
• Mentor backend engineers, conduct rigorous code reviews, and establish software design and engineering standards.
• Partner with Engineering, Product, Campaign Management, and other stakeholders to align technical solutions with business objectives.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, including 2+ years working directly with programmatic advertising systems.
• Hands-on experience with OpenRTB, programmatic auctions, bid request and response flows, timeouts, floor pricing, and deal types.
• Experience designing, building, and operating high-throughput, latency-sensitive distributed systems at scale.
• Strong knowledge of service boundaries, API design, asynchronous processing, failure modes, instrumentation, monitoring, load testing, and performance analysis.
• Experience leading major technical initiatives, influencing roadmaps, driving cross-team alignment, and mentoring engineers.
• Ability to connect engineering decisions to revenue, ad delivery, reach, and customer outcomes and communicate with non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with identity and cookie synchronization, audience targeting, measurement, and the end-to-end lifecycle of an ad request.
• Experience integrating complex external platforms with attention to versioning, data inconsistencies, operational dependencies, and graceful degradation.
