Research Security Manager (Defence Research)

Location: Primarily based at hirify.global Brisbane South (Nathan), Australia, with work across other university locations as required; on-campus and work-from-home options are available.

Salary: AUD 137,165–142,070 per year plus 17% employer superannuation. Total FTE package: AUD 160,483–166,222 per year.

What you will do

• Act as the primary contact for research security matters and liaise with regulatory agencies.
• Serve as Institutional Security Officer under Defence Science Partnership and Defence Industry Security Program frameworks.
• Advise on defence export controls, autonomous sanctions, foreign influence, and foreign interference requirements.
• Manage licences, permits, technology control plans, compliance records, and reporting obligations.
• Develop research security policies, procedures, governance frameworks, training, guidance, and digital tools.
• Conduct due diligence and risk assessments while advising researchers, HDR candidates, staff, and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• Ability to obtain and maintain an NV1 Security Clearance or higher.
• Bachelor's or postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline, with at least five years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Knowledge of research security, defence export controls, autonomous sanctions, foreign interference, and foreign influence frameworks.
• Experience developing and monitoring compliance, governance, or risk management frameworks in a complex organisation.
• Strong due diligence, risk assessment, policy development, legislative interpretation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Unrestricted working rights in Australia are required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience in higher education, research, government, defence, national security, or regulatory sectors.
• Knowledge of the Defence Industry Security Program, Defence Science Partnership framework, export controls, sanctions compliance, or related research security programs.
• Experience engaging with Commonwealth Government agencies and regulatory authorities.
