Staff Software Engineer, Backend (AI)

What you will do

• Lead large, ambiguous technical projects from problem definition through architecture, implementation, and production.
• Architect and build backend systems for AI-driven workflows, including real-time inference, tool orchestration, and long-running processes.
• Drive technical direction with emphasis on scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
• Build new systems from 0 to 1 while evolving existing architecture as the product and organization scale.
• Establish patterns and abstractions, partner with product and design, and make pragmatic technical tradeoffs.
• Raise engineering standards through architecture, code reviews, mentorship, testing, deployment, observability, and production ownership.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating backend systems.
• Deep expertise in software architecture, distributed systems, algorithms, and system design.
• Experience independently leading large, technically complex projects in ambiguous environments.
• Track record of taking products or systems from 0 to 1 and making architectural decisions with incomplete information.
• Experience designing production systems for scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
• Strong communication, product judgment, ownership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI/ML systems, LLMs, or agentic workflows.
• Experience in high-growth or early-stage startups.
• Proficiency with TypeScript or similar languages.
