Staff Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Mountain View, CA or San Francisco, CA

Estimated base salary: $210K–$275K, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate backend systems powering ambient AI products across mobile and web.
• Build inference workflows coordinating transcription, diarization, language models, clinical extraction, summarization, and other AI capabilities.
• Develop durable orchestration for scheduling, queueing, retries, timeouts, fallbacks, replay, recovery, model routing, and workflow state.
• Improve reliability, scalability, observability, deployment systems, cloud infrastructure, capacity planning, and operational tooling.
• Design APIs and data models for safe interaction with long-running workflows.
• Lead incident response, eliminate systemic failure patterns, and mentor engineers on distributed systems and backend architecture.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional backend or infrastructure engineering experience.
• Experience designing, building, and operating production distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language.
• Experience with asynchronous processing, message queues, event-driven systems, or durable workflow execution.
• Understanding of idempotency, consistency, concurrency, backpressure, retries, failure isolation, and eventual completion.
• Experience operating cloud services, designing APIs and data models, debugging across system boundaries, and improving reliability and scalability.

Nice to have

• Experience with speech-to-text, diarization, transcription, or audio-based machine-learning workflows.
• Experience orchestrating large language models or multi-model inference pipelines.
• Familiarity with Temporal, Kafka, Pub/Sub, SQS, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code tools.
• Experience with model routing, inference gateways, rate limiting, batching, caching, GPU-backed workloads, or workflow inspection tools.
• Exposure to healthcare, HIPAA, SOC 2, encryption, privacy, security, or other regulated environments.
