Principal Data Scientist (AI)

Location: Bentonville, Arkansas, United States — Walmart home office

Annual salary: $110,000–$220,000, plus performance-based bonuses and possible stock compensation.

What you will do

• Develop, test, and deploy advanced machine learning models using Python and SQL.
• Analyze complex business problems, identify root causes, and recommend data-driven solutions.
• Source and validate data from multiple systems for analytical modeling and insight generation.
• Lead model assessment, validation, continuous improvement, and production scalability.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, UX, retail operations, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into data science initiatives.
• Mentor team members on advanced analytics, coding practices, and data visualization.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in statistics, economics, analytics, mathematics, computer science, information technology, or a related field plus 3 years of analytics experience; or a master’s degree plus 1 year of experience; or 5 years of relevant experience.
• Extensive experience developing and testing code with Python, SQL, and Java.
• Proficiency in machine learning algorithms, deep learning, advanced statistical analysis, and MLOps.
• Expertise in data source identification, data quality assessment, data strategy, and scalable model deployment.
• Experience translating complex business problems into analytical models and communicating insights through data visualization.
• Leadership experience mentoring teams and driving cross-functional collaboration.

Nice to have

• Experience with optimization models, open-source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or Torch, and Python, Spark, Scala, or R assessments.
• PhD in machine learning, computer science, information technology, operations research, statistics, applied mathematics, or econometrics.
• Research publications or active peer-review experience in relevant journals or conferences.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility practices.
