Principal Software Engineer - Embedded (RIS)

Location: Hybrid in Sunnyvale, California, with an average of two days per week in an HPE office

Base salary: USD 172,000–349,000 annually in California; variable incentives may also be offered.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded platform software and firmware for networking systems.
• Develop low-level Linux-based software, device drivers, and system components.
• Program and enable network processors, ASICs, and other networking hardware.
• Participate in architecture, design, implementation, testing, debugging, and sustaining engineering.
• Bring up new hardware platforms and support board-level integration and validation.
• Collaborate with hardware, firmware, systems, and architecture teams to improve software quality, performance, and reliability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of professional experience developing embedded software or firmware.
• Strong programming skills in C and C++.
• Extensive experience with embedded software in Linux or Unix environments.
• Hands-on experience developing software for networking platforms such as routers or switches.
• Experience with device drivers, system-level software, hardware bring-up, validation, and advanced debugging tools.

Nice to have

• Experience with Ethernet interfaces, high-speed PHYs, SERDES, PCIe, I2C, FPGA, and Ethernet MAC/PHY.
• Knowledge of hardware board design, board-level architecture, chassis management, and platform management software.
• Experience programming NPUs, ASICs, or other networking silicon.
• Familiarity with virtualization technologies and large-scale carrier-grade networking systems.
