Principal Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with at least two days per week or 40% of working time at an office in Edinburgh, Bristol, Leeds, or Manchester, United Kingdom

Salary: £84,624–£105,780 per year, depending on location and experience

What you will do

• Lead the engineering of domain-specific agents, tools, and automations from prototype through operational MVP.
• Design reusable capabilities for the AI Productivity Lab platform, including skills, tools, and operating procedure assets.
• Evaluate agentic coding and coworking technologies and open-source solutions to accelerate delivery.
• Partner with business stakeholders and line-of-business champions to embed agents into processes, SOPs, and tooling.
• Measure business outcomes and provide technical leadership through coaching, mentoring, code reviews, and stakeholder engagement.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading technology solution delivery in complex production environments with ownership of business outcomes.
• Extensive knowledge of solutions architecture, software engineering, and business process automation.
• Hands-on experience with agentic coding or coworking technologies and ecosystems, such as Claude Code, Cowork, OpenClaw, or GitHub Copilot.
• Strong understanding of operational processes and risk management; financial services experience is preferred.
• Ability to influence stakeholders, guide teams through ambiguity, and turn productivity opportunities into technical direction and MVPs.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement from an office in Edinburgh, Bristol, Leeds, or Manchester for at least two days per week or 40% of working time.

Nice to have

• Expertise in knowledge management, enterprise ontology, or knowledge graph technology.
• Business process optimisation experience, including Business Process Modelling or Lean Six Sigma.
• Experience with applied research and experimentation.
• Advanced degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related subject.
