Staff Applied Research Scientist - Fraud Detection (AI)

Location: Open to working in Chevy Chase, Maryland; Palo Alto, California; or New York City, New York

Annual salary: $130,000–$260,000

What you will do

• Define the architecture and technical direction for scalable, reliable, compliant AI/ML solutions with enterprise impact.
• Design and deploy fraud detection and prevention models across claims, payment processing, underwriting, policy management, and customer service.
• Lead end-to-end productionization across model development, data pipelines, feature stores, evaluation, deployment, A/B testing, and monitoring.
• Build KPI, experimentation, and causal inference frameworks to measure business impact and guide AI investments.
• Integrate research in machine learning, GenAI, LLMs, optimization, and agentic AI into practical insurance solutions.
• Mentor scientists, collaborate with product, engineering, governance, legal, and operations teams, and communicate technical decisions to senior stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, mathematics, or a related quantitative field; a PhD is preferred.
• 6+ years of professional experience delivering applied AI/ML solutions in production and leading cross-functional initiatives.
• Experience building and operationalizing fraud detection and prevention solutions using machine learning, LLMs, and agentic AI systems.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with deep experience in PyTorch, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn.
• Experience with KPI frameworks, experimentation, causal analysis, stakeholder management, and executive communication.
• Ability to work in one of the listed United States locations; hirify.global will consider sponsoring employment authorization for a qualified new applicant.

Nice to have

• Experience with GenAI and LLM practices including prompt design, RAG, evaluation, guardrails, red-teaming, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Research experience with patents, publications, or impactful open-source contributions.
• Familiarity with insurance operations and model governance in regulated environments.
