Machinist-Instrument Maker Level III

Location: Foothills Lab in Boulder, Colorado; all work must be performed within the United States, excluding U.S. Territories. This is an onsite, fixed-term position of six months or more.

Salary: $73,140–$91,430 per year.

What you will do

• Plan, program, set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC and manual machine tools for complex research instruments, prototypes, and components.
• Perform advanced multi-axis CNC/CAM programming, develop workholding, jigs, and fixtures, and select materials, tooling, feeds, speeds, and machining sequences.
• Use precision inspection equipment to verify conformance with drawings, tolerances, and quality requirements.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, and instrument makers to evaluate manufacturability and improve designs and processes.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to shop personnel and coordinate designated fabrication projects, including status, technical issues, schedules, and cost estimates.
• Recommend tooling, equipment, and process improvements while following OSHA and machine-shop safety requirements.

Requirements

• Completion of a relevant machine-trade vocational program and at least six years of high-precision machining experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Advanced expertise in machinist and instrument-maker trades, close-tolerance fabrication, machine-shop equipment, and prototype instrument production.
• Experience interpreting CAD models, engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, sketches, tolerances, and fabrication requirements.
• Advanced CNC machine operation and CAM/CNC programming skills, including GibbsCAM.
• Knowledge of metals, plastics, composites, machining, fixturing, inspection, cutting tools, feeds and speeds, and process planning.
• Must be able to work in the United States and comply with U.S. export-control requirements; visa sponsorship is not available.
