General Counsel

Location: Remote, Portland, Oregon / United States

The business operates in a consumer-facing e-commerce and automotive regulatory environment requiring in-house legal leadership.

What you will do

• Own the legal strategy and serve as the primary legal advisor to executive leadership and business teams.
• Draft, review, negotiate, and maintain commercial agreements, customer terms, e-commerce disclosures, vendor contracts, partnership agreements, technology agreements, service contracts, and insurance contracts.
• Lead DMV, dealer licensing, consumer protection, corporate compliance, licensing, registrations, filings, and entity-management matters.
• Resolve escalated customer complaints, regulatory inquiries, disputes, litigation, arbitration, small claims, and lawsuits.
• Develop litigation and dispute-resolution strategies, including decisions on defense, settlement, outside counsel, legal spending, and resolution.
• Provide practical recommendations on legal and commercial risk for products, services, partnerships, and business initiatives.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
• Approximately 8+ years of legal experience, including meaningful corporate generalist experience; prior in-house experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and business agreements.
• Experience managing customer disputes, regulatory complaints, litigation, arbitration, and outside counsel.
• Strong business judgment, independent analytical skills, strategic decision-making, organization, and written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work hands-on and independently, personally drafting documents, conducting research, and managing day-to-day legal matters; occasional travel may be required.

Nice to have

• Multiple state bar admissions, particularly Florida, Oregon, and Texas.
• Experience in consumer-facing, e-commerce, automotive vehicle sales, dealerships, auctions, marketplaces, technology, or other regulated businesses.
• Experience with DMV, dealer licensing, title, or related automotive regulatory matters.
