Senior Legal Counsel - Product & Privacy (AI)

Location: Based in Sydney, Australia, with a hybrid working arrangement and regular collaboration on the Sydney campus.

What you will do

• Advise product and engineering teams on privacy, data protection, intellectual property, marketing, online safety, AI regulation, platform, competition, and consumer laws.
• Support product development, including generative and agentic AI products, go-to-market strategies, partnerships, consumer-facing terms, and risk mitigation.
• Develop and operationalize company-wide AI policies, legal frameworks, playbooks, and internal guidance.
• Collaborate with privacy, IP, security, product, engineering, marketing, and other business stakeholders.
• Build scalable legal review processes that enable new product launches.
• Coordinate privacy and data security incident response, including investigations, notifications, and resolution efforts.

Requirements

• Legal qualification with an AUS/NZ, UK, EU, or US practising certificate.
• 10+ years of legal practice experience, including some in-house experience, preferably in a technology company.
• Knowledge of global digital, AI, privacy, consumer, and online safety laws, including the EU AI Act, GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, Digital Services Act, and Online Safety Acts.
• Deep understanding of modern AI technologies and products, including generative and agentic AI and their privacy, IP, safety, and regulatory implications.
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues across time zones and work with engineers, product managers, and marketers.
• CIPP certification must be obtained within six months of joining.

Nice to have

• AI Governance Professional or Certified Information Privacy Professional qualifications.
• Knowledge of Canva and comfort with technology and AI experimentation.
• Experience advising rapidly growing technology companies on privacy and product regulatory requirements.
